Roots of Music
The Roots of Music tutoring program provides academic tutoring and mentorship to students in the Roots of Music marching band, an inter-school program in New Orleans. Students involved in the program receive access to free music lessons, instruments, and dinner. In order to remain a member, students are required to maintain a certain GPA – that’s where we come in! Volunteers tutor students on Monday – Thursday, from 3:30-6pm (usually committing to one day a week). If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mary Soule, email@example.com or Sarah Levinson, firstname.lastname@example.org.
TUSTEP is a 4-month-old organization that works with Canine Companions for Independence to raise service dogs on campus, promote awareness about assistance animals, and provide service to other types of charitable animal organizations such as the SPCA. TUSTEP has just received its first puppy, Kipper, who is being raised by Adam Kline, President and founder of the club. He will be responsible for training Kipper for 12 to 18 months, before he goes off to his more advanced training.
Members of TUSTEP can become involved in many different levels of service all the way up to raising, and including “puppy sitting” for the service dogs when the raisers are busy. All puppy sitters attend a mandatory training session on teaching commands to the service dogs. Additionally, a fundraising committee is working on events to help support all raisers with bills for the food, veterinary care, etc. In the beginning of the year the executive board visited Dixon correctional facility in Baton Rouge to learn about their work with CCI dogs — trips to Dixon will take place for volunteers over the course of the school year.
TUSTEP is a new organization to Tulane’s campus and is looking for your support!
